Ingredients

Materials Needed

  • 1 jar Clear glass or plastic jar A container to hold the experiment.
  • 1 can Shaving cream Whipped cream can also work for a fun twist.
  • a few drops Food coloring (various colors) You can use gel or liquid food coloring.
  • 1 cup Water For filling the jar and mixing with the food coloring.
  • small cups Small measuring cups For mixing the food coloring.
  • 1 tray Plastic tray For easier cleanup.
  • as needed towels Paper towels For any spills.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by filling your jar about three-quarters full with water.
  • Top the water with a generous amount of shaving cream, creating a fluffy cloud.
  • Allow the shaving cream to settle for a couple of minutes.

Mixing Colors

  • In small cups, mix a few drops of food coloring with water - about 10 drops in 1/4 cup of water works well.
  • Using a dropper or a spoon, gently add the colored water one drop at a time onto the shaving cream cloud.
  • Watch as the colored water slowly makes its way down through the cream and into the jar, resembling rain.
  • Continue adding different colors until you achieve a desirable colorful rain effect.

Discussion

  • Talk about what the children see and how it relates to real-life rain and clouds.

Notes

It's best to conduct this activity fresh since the shaving cream starts to break down over time. Store the jar covered for a couple of days for reuse. You can encourage imaginative play afterward or create educational games focusing on weather.
