Ingredients
  

Painting Materials

  • 1 cup Baking soda For the base canvas.
  • 1 cup White vinegar Mix with water for the paint.
  • 2-3 drops Food coloring (washable preferred) Add to vinegar and water mixture.
  • 1 cup Water Mix with vinegar to create paint.

Supplies

  • 2-3 pieces Plastic trays or paper plates For mixing the paint.
  • 3-4 pieces Paintbrushes For the painting activity.
  • 1 piece Baking sheet or large cardboard To hold the artwork while drying.
  • optional Plastic gloves To keep hands clean.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Spread a layer of baking soda on a plastic tray or large piece of cardboard to prepare the canvas.

Making the Paint

  • In separate cups, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water, then add a few drops of washable food coloring until you achieve your desired hue.

Painting

  • Give each child a paintbrush and let them dip it into the colored vinegar mixture.
  • Encourage kids to paint their designs onto the baking soda layer.

Fizzing Reaction

  • As the colored vinegar touches the baking soda, it will fizz and bubble up, creating a beautiful reaction.

Drying

  • Allow the artwork to dry completely, usually around 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Notes

Encourage kids to describe what they see as they paint to promote critical thinking. Be sure to supervise young children during the activity.
