Determining Freshness of Salmon

Learn how to identify the freshness of salmon to ensure safe and delicious meals by recognizing visual, smell, and texture cues, along with proper storage tips.

Instructions

Visual Inspection

  • Look for bright and consistent color. Fresh salmon exhibits a uniform pink-to-orange color with natural marbling.
  • Check for discoloration or dark spots that may indicate spoilage.
  • Inspect the skin for shine and texture; it should appear shiny and smooth if fresh.

Smell Test

  • Recognize the mild and clean smell of fresh salmon.
  • If the salmon smells strongly fishy, ammonia-like, or sour, it is spoiled.

Texture and Touch

  • Gently press on the salmon; it should feel firm and spring back.
  • Check for excessive sliminess which indicates bacterial growth.

Storage Tips

  • Store raw salmon in the fridge for 1-2 days at 32-38°F.
  • Keep cooked salmon in an airtight container for 3-4 days in the fridge.
  • Label and wrap salmon properly for long-term storage in the freezer.

Notes

When in doubt, it's better to discard questionable salmon to avoid health risks. Always prioritize proper storage to maintain quality.
