Ingredients
Scale
For the Chocolate Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup whole milk (room temperature)
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs (room temperature)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water or brewed coffee (enhances chocolate flavor)
For the Pink Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
- Pink food coloring
For the Green Lettering:
- ½ cup buttercream frosting (from above)
- Green food coloring
- Piping bag with small round tip
Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the Chocolate Cake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.
- Stir in hot water or coffee, mixing just until combined. The batter will be thin – this is normal!
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool completely before frosting.
2️⃣ Make the Pink Frosting
- In a mixing bowl, beat the butter until light and fluffy.
- Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing well after each addition.
- Stir in vanilla extract and heavy cream, beating until smooth.
- Add pink food coloring, a few drops at a time, until you achieve the signature pink color.
3️⃣ Assemble & Decorate
- Once the cake is completely cool, spread the pink frosting evenly using a spatula.
- To create the rustic homemade look, roughly spread the frosting, avoiding a perfect finish.
- In a small bowl, mix the reserved frosting with green food coloring for the lettering.
- Using a piping bag with a small round tip, pipe “Happee Birthdae Harry” in uneven, messy cursive.
- Optional: Add green snake details by piping small swirls or shaping fondant snakes.
Notes
- For a taller cake, double the recipe and make two layers!
- No piping bag? Use a ziplock bag with a tiny hole cut in the corner.
- For extra detail, add chocolate ganache drips for a richer texture.
- Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days, or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
